Designer of 4 features, including the student dashboard featured in this case study

Product

Funsport is an education kiosk that provides interactive physical training for students

My Role

Collaboration

12 members, including PMs, engineers, marketing, and testing teams

Impacts

Features reached 30,000 students, promoting their engagement and performance

The fitness training engagement has been a real problem for many schools in China. School enrollment rates and rankings are tied to student fitness scores, but students have been underperforming and undertrained due to disorganization and repetition — there aren’t many teachers, but a lot of students.

Transforming school fitness training into something fun.

THE CORE EXPERIENCE

Funsport comes in to replace manual organization into digital ones, providing interactive training and evaluative reports. In this project, my goal is to make student training process with Funsport a fun one, attracting them to come back and engage in training more.

THE TEAM

Cross-functional Collaboration

In this project, I shared with PM the responsibilities of user discovery, problem statement, and solution conceptualization. I also wrote design specifications and feature requirements for shipping the design to engineers. I was individually responsible for wireframing, idea testing, and prototyping.

THE USER PROBLEM

Students can’t participate in regular, high-quality fitness training.

Students need to pass fitness exams to graduate and get into good schools, so it is important for them to train and improve as well. In my co-problem discovery with the PM, I identified they are not able to engage in regular and effective fitness training.

THE DESIGN CHALLENGE

How might we optimize the training procedure so that it’s fun and rewarding?

IDEATION

Envisioning a personal tracking system

I came up with initial ideas of a system that provides enough guidance and feedback for students that could make their training experiences more effective. Ideas including awarding badges and displaying achievements were sketched out in the first version.

I showed the ideation to the stakeholders…

Quick feedback gathering is a key part of my process. I collected information on the validity of the problem statement and how this initial design is addressing identified problems.

Optimizing to improve engagement

ITERATION

A key insight I gained from the feedback is I should aim to maximize engagement. The current design has no advantage at it, and the badge system might be a break point to tackle this challenge. I iterated based on the feedback and started to think about how to leverage the badge system to encourage training engagement.

Constructing Information Architecture

THE STRUCTURE

At this stage, I was able to start building detail pages revolving the main dashboard.

COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS

With a goal to stimulate engagement, I looked beyond Funsport users…

I conducted a comparative analysis on some popular learning and fitness apps to discover how they keep users motivated and engaged in a long term.

Goal Setting &
Personalization

Set goals of a range levels help different user groups commit and return regularly

Splitting larger goals into actionable items and tasks and provide clear index keep users on track

Task Truncation & Visible Progress

Reinforcements & Rewards

Feedback and rewards can reinforce positive behaviors and encourage consistent training behavior

I tried out different ideas that fit into the Funsport badge system…

INCORPORATING INSIGHTS

Monthly Goals & Weekly Tasks gets things done.

After several ideations, I landed on a structure that follows the school training schedule, having clearer monthly goals and smaller tasks that invite actions more easily. I also presented the design iterations to stakeholders and gained positive feedback.

"What’s our secret sauce to keep students coming back for more training?"

— “Let’s ramp up the motivation game!”

CONCEPT ITERATION

To deal with the challenge that monthly challenges will get old and badges get repetitive, I brainstormed ways to make the badge collection process every month exciting and fresh, inviting students to keep coming back!

FINAL DESIGN

A student dashboard powered by gamification and personalization, driving training engagement.

36%

Increase in Training Engagement

Dashboard provides a comprehensive overview of tasks, progress, and performance. Students can start training with one click.

Training Starts after One Glance.

14%

Increase in Monthly Active Users

The badge wall is designed as an interactive world map that documents badges gained in different months. It falls under the concept of gamified rewards.

Mark the Badges on a World Map.

8%

Increase in Customer Satisfaction

Get detailed analysis on historical scores trend, highlighted moments, and analysis report for improvement. This is data recorded and analyzed just for them.
